Scholarship Halls

KU has 12 scholarship halls based on the principle of cooperative living. Residents take part in cooking and cleaning their halls (4-6 hours a week in shifts compatible with class schedules) in exchange for a reduced housing rate. Residents are not required to have earned an academic scholarship from KU to live in a scholarship hall.

All halls have:

  • Internet access
  • Academic Resource Centers with computers and study aids
  • KU card-operated laundry areas
  • living and recreational space
  • their own dining area and kitchen

The schol halls are rich in tradition and their many community programs reflect that emphasis. About 50 people live in each hall.

Floor plans vary, but most schol halls offer 4-person rooms, a central study/living room with small sleeping rooms. Except for Miller and Watkins, room and meals are offered as a package and cannot be purchased separately. Rates for Watkins and Miller don't include food costs. The women in those halls purchase groceries to stock small group kitchens.

Hall tours are offered from 3-5 p.m., Monday through Saturday when classes are in session. Meet us at Crawford Community Center. Student tour guides will be available and no reservations are required.

How to Apply

The application process is competitive. Each prospective resident's materials are reviewed and ranked based on academic achievement (GPA and test scores), financial need, and involvement in school or community activities. The application process is described on the housing application form. It includes two essay questions and references that are submitted on the form that's provided to you.

Any prospective or current undergraduate student may apply to live in the schol halls. The application priority date is March 1 each year and applicants are notified of their placement starting in April. Students are encouraged to apply for residence hall housing as well until scholarship hall decisions are made. Any contract costs paid toward a residence hall contract will be applied to a scholarship hall contract if a student is placed in a scholarship hall.
