Important Move-In Information for New Residents
Opening Day Move-in
Go directly to your building on Opening Day. The residence halls and scholarship halls open at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 16th. Jayhawker Towers open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, August 14th. You may register and move in any time between Opening Day and the start of classes, but we encourage all residents to arrive in time to participate in Hawk Week activities, which begin Sunday evening, August 16th. If you anticipate a need to check in after classes begin, please make arrangements with your Complex Director. Visit www.ku.edu/visit/directions.shtml for the most up-to-date information about highway construction in the Lawrence area.
Meal service begins with brunch on Monday, August 17th.
Before Checking In...
Before checking in to your apartment, room, or suite, you will be asked to fill out registration materials for the front desk. You will also be asked to complete an apartment/room/suite inventory, a form that details the condition of your space at check-in, which will later be used to check the condition of the space at check-out.
Parking & Unloading
Once you arrive, follow these steps: Park your car away from the building until after you have registered at the hall and obtained your keys and checked your apartment/room/suite. After checking in, move your car closer to your building, unloading as quickly as possible. Move your car to a permanent parking space as soon as you can to make room for others. Remember, Opening Day is likely to be hot and hectic. Be prepared to wait in lines of traffic and to be as patient as possible.
A parking permit is required to park in the residence hall, scholarship hall, and Jayhawker Towers lots during the academic year. After you're enrolled, purchase your permit at the Parking Department, located on the main level of the parking garage just north of Allen Field House, or on-line via the Kyou Portal ("Services" tab).
Your Room & What to Bring
Residents of residence halls and scholarship halls should bring a cell phone, an alarm clock, linens, toiletries, a desk lamp, school supplies, an umbrella, laundry and cleaning supplies, current social security and medical insurance cards, first aid kit, and any prescription or over the counter medications. Apartment residents will need to bring the above, along with cookware, tableware, living room furniture, and additional lamps as needed. Consider a power strip for electrical items such as TVs, computers and stereos. Consult with your roommate(s) about larger items like futons, carpet, curtains or microwave ovens.
You may want a loft for your bed or a small refrigerator. It is possible to rent these items from a company with whom we contract for this service. Look for this rental information in a separate mailing.
For your safety and the safety of others:
- Alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited
- Firearms, weapons, and fireworks are prohibited
- Candles, incense, and open flame decorations are prohibited
Leave these items at home. Be sure you have reviewed the Department of Student Housing Handbook. We recommend that you open the PDF and print the document, so you have a copy for your reference. The Housing Handbook contains valuable information about the services and resources available to you, as well as the policies and procedures to know while living on campus.
