Rich Traditions and a Proud FutureThe links listed below will take you to short histories developed by the staff of the KU History Galleries and the Department of Student Housing. We know you’ll enjoy reading the results this collaborative project, documenting the history and rich traditions of student housing here at KU.
Response to these short histories was positive, so attention was given to research and adding information about the following residences affiliated with, or operated by the University of Kansas. The results track the frequently humorous development of KU houses, halls, and co-ops as seen through the eyes of more than 900 contributing alumni.
| Carruth-O’Leary Residence Hall | Lakota Co-op |
|
| Graduate Girls & Couples Co-op | Sunflower Ordnance Housing | |
Hillcrest House |
Sunnyside Apartments | |
| Joseph R. Pearson Residence Hall | Wankanta Co-op | |
| Kanza Hall | Wita Wenton Co-op | |
| Kaw Koettes Hall |
Making Do & Getting Through: KU Co-ops, Halls, and Houses 1919-1966 is a rich tapestry (and 400-page book) woven from memories, photos, and letters. Fred McElhenie, long-time member of the Student Housing staff, has gathered details from archives, yearbooks, and personal remembrances.
