Services In Your Community

Academic Resource Centers (ARCs)

The residence hall complexes have Academic Resource Centers, which are small computer labs with some reference materials, periodicals, and study space. ARCs serve as host to tutoring and writing assistance.

The Jayhawker Towers Academic Resource Center, located in B Tower, is a full-service resource center for Towers and Stouffer Place residents. The center provides computers, books, and other academic support materials. For more information on services and hours of operation, call the Towers ARC office at 864-5848.

The scholarship halls each have a small computer room. Some halls have additional resource and reference materials. See your Scholarship Hall Director for information.

Dining Residence Halls and Apartment Living

KU Cuisine Meal Plans are a required component of the residence hall contract and optional for scholarship hall and apartment living residents. KU Cuisine is actually a broad variety of meal plans designed to fit student lifestyles and schedules. Visit www.kudining.com for up-to-date information about KU Dining Services, including how to add cash to your KU Card, how to add all-you-care-to-eat meals for use in the residential dining centers, how and where to use the "cash" component of each meal plan, and how and when you can change meal plans.

Meal Hours

Each scholarship hall determines its own meal hours and number of formal meals provided each week. Leftovers and self-service items are available as well. See the SHD, Food Board Manager, or Proctor if you have any questions or concerns about the meal service or hours.

Guest Meals

Scholarship hall resident board payments are designed to provide service to those living in the hall. Each resident has the privilege of having meal guests as long as the guests do not infringe on the rights of other residents. Scholarship hall policies for guest meals are set individually by hall. Residents may vote to include a certain number of guest meals in the total budget, or to set a standard guest meal price payable at the time of service. All costs for meals of scholarship hall guests are ultimately the responsibility of the host.

Food Board

Scholarship halls use a Food Board Manager to serve as a communication link between the residents and the Scholarship Hall Director. Food Board Managers seek resident input about menu selection, food quality, and general issues related to meal service.

Special Diets

Dietary requirements due to illness, doctor's orders, or religious reasons may be accommodated on a limited basis by contacting your SHD.

Dining policies for Miller and Watkins Scholarship Halls

Each hall has seven individual kitchens with seven students assigned to each kitchen. Residents are required to pay a kitchen start-up fee. These funds are used for the purchase of staples and kitchen supplies. Additional payments, generally on a monthly basis, are used to fund the purchase of food for weekly meals. Residents are assigned weekly kitchen shifts for the upkeep of the kitchens. With the exception of a few "independent" kitchens, each kitchen is required to eat four or five meals together each week; usually these are evening meals. Residents are responsible for planning, purchasing supplies, and preparation of these meals. New residents are not eligible for "independent" kitchens. Each resident is responsible for her own meals at breakfast, lunch, and on weekends. Storage space for each resident's personal food supply is provided in each kitchen's cabinets and refrigerator.

The Front Desk/Office

The front desk/office is the information hub and service center for the housing community. A number of services are provided by the hall desk staff. Services may include checking out keys to special rooms (music practice rooms, dance rooms, conference rooms, study rooms, etc.) or providing phone numbers and general information. Board games, vacuum cleaners, tools, and sporting equipment are available for limited check-out. You should also go to the front desk if you are locked out of your room, need to complete a maintenance report, or need other staff assistance. Front desk staff are not permitted to share student room numbers.

Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum cleaners may be borrowed for one-hour periods during designated hours. The resident must leave photo identification in exchange for the machine. Replacement charges will be assessed for lost or broken vacuums. Please notify the desk staff if the vacuum you checked out is not working properly, so that it may be repaired.

Lost and Found

Items turned in to your hall/complex office or desk will be held for thirty days. After that, items of value will be turned over to the University of Kansas Public Safety office.

Gardening for Stouffer Place and Sunflower Apartment Residents

Garden plots are available to residents of Stouffer Place during the summer months. This designated garden site is the only place residents can have gardens. The number of spaces in the garden is limited and sign-up is held early in the spring. The Stouffer Neighborhood Association coordinates the process for assigning garden plots. Flower beds, gardens, and trelliswork are not allowed in front of or next to individual apartments. Residents may have flowers in movable containers on the porch/balcony in front of their apartment provided the walkways remain clear.

Laundry

KU Card and/or coin-operated washers and dryers are available for use by residents in each hall/complex. Common courtesy should be exercised by all residents since many people share these machines. Residents should not leave laundry unattended. Any theft should be reported to the front desk of the complex and KU Public Safety. The Department of Student Housing is not responsible for damaged or lost articles. Use of laundry facilities is for Department of Student Housing residents only.

Laundry facilities are located in a lower level of each residence/scholarship hall, the basement of Tower B, in the basement of Stouffer Place building 1, and the basement of Sunflower Apartments building 5. A small laundry is located in Tower A for residents living in that tower.

Mail for Residence Halls and Scholarship Halls

Federal mail is delivered Monday through Saturday while classes are in session. No mail delivery is made to the halls during break periods. Use of mailboxes is restricted to federal and campus mail. Official information for the Department of Student Housing may also be distributed via mailboxes.

Custodial Services

Custodians are responsible for cleaning the public areas of each residence hall Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings. However, it is the responsibility of every resident to assist in the upkeep of the hall by picking up areas like the hallway, lobby, and restroom. Residents are expected to keep their room/suite clean and in good condition.

Scholarship hall residents are primarily responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of their hall. Custodial staff is assigned to the scholarship halls to assist and train the residents and to perform some specialized cleaning.

Maintenance

General building and equipment repair needs should be reported to the front desk in your residence hall, to your Scholarship Hall Director or Proctor, or to the apartment living office. When you report a maintenance concern, you are giving the maintenance or custodial staff permission to enter your room or apartment to make the repair. An on-site maintenance staff cares for common areas of the complex. Most maintenance requests are performed at no cost to the resident. The following problems should be reported immediately: uncharged fire extinguisher, non-functioning smoke detector, pipe leaks, broken tile or cracked grout, ceiling or wall leaks, and appliance malfunction.

Preparation for Carpet Cleaning (Jayhawker Towers Only)

Students may schedule a carpet cleaning through the Apartment Living Office at 864-8305. At that time the resident will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare the apartment for cleaning. Residents are expected to have the area prepared by the time of the appointment. If the apartment is not prepared at the appointed time, a $20 fine could be assessed. Residents may cancel their appointment through the front desk 48 hours prior to the scheduled time at no charge.

Pest Control

Residents living in Student Housing may request pest control service through a maintenance request. Pest control service is conducted once per month for all buildings in Stouffer Place and Sunflower Apartments. Residents will receive instruction for preparing their room/suite/apartment for the pest control treatment. Residents are expected to have the area prepared by the time of the appointment. If the room/suite/apartment is not prepared at the appointed time, a $20 fine could be assessed. Residents may cancel their appointment through the front desk 48 hours prior to scheduled time at no charge. Apartment residents will be asked to vacate their premises for two to four hours.

Kitchen
  1. Remove all items from kitchen cabinets and pantry. Place those items away from the area to be treated and cover them with a tablecloth or sheet. Do not stack food or dishes on countertops.
  2. Remove all drawers from cabinets; it is not necessary to empty drawers.
  3. Clean areas prior to treatment with a mild detergent to remove bacteria and other residue, as attempts to do so afterwards will result in removal of insecticide.
Bathroom

Remove all items from bathroom cabinet and medicine cabinet.

Other Areas:
  1. Clear any furniture from the front of the furnace room and open the doors.
  2. Remove all items from shelves in clothes closets and linen closets, and clear the floors in these areas. It is not necessary to move clothes on hangers unless specifically requested.
  3. Treatment of other rooms may involve placement of insecticides in cracks or crevices. It may be necessary to treat tables, chairs, and electrical appliances with a non-residual flushing agent.
  4. Cover aquariums and fish bowls until after treatment and shut off pumps supplying air to the tank.

All residents should take a role in the prevention of pests by keeping their room/suite/apartment clean. Wash dishes and utensils immediately after using. Store foods properly, dispose of trash properly, and report pests immediately and as accurately as possible.

Routine Health and Safety Inspections

Each semester a member of maintenance/custodial staff and the Complex Director/Scholarship Hall Director will enter suites and apartments for health and safety inspections. Residents will be notified at least one week in advance and then again 24 hours prior to the inspections.

Residents are expected to keep their suites and apartments sanitary and safe. Inspections will be for unsanitary conditions (accumulated trash and food or cleanliness of bath areas) and for fire safety violations. If a suite or apartment does not meet health and safety specifications, the residents will have one week to correct the situation at which time another inspection will be scheduled.

Recycling/Trash Disposal

Residents in any living unit may be charged for the improper disposal of trash.

In residence halls and scholarship halls, large trash cans are available on each floor for the disposal of trash from your room/suite. Large items should be taken your hall's dumpster.

At Jayhawker Towers, place garbage and trash in plastic bags (which are available in the Apartment Living office). Close them securely and dispose of them in the large trash containers located throughout the courtyard.

At Stouffer Place and Sunflower Apartments, all garbage and trash must be sealed in plastic bags and deposited in the dumpsters near the buildings.

Disposal of Hazardous Materials

Guidelines concerning the disposal of motor oil or other hazardous materials should be observed carefully. Never attempt to dispose of oil in the dumpster or allow oil and/or antifreeze to drain on the ground. Consult the City of Lawrence for instruction regarding disposal of household hazardous waste.

Vending Areas

Vending machines are available in most buildings; however, they are not stocked or maintained by the Department of Student Housing. If you lose money in a machine, please refer to the instructions posted on the machine.

Water Shut-offs (Apartments, Suite-style Residence/Scholarship Halls)

Shut-offs are located under the kitchen sink, lavatory, and toilet. They are there for service and maintenance of the fixtures. In case of an emergency, you may turn the water off at the fixture until maintenance arrives to make repairs. Do not use the shut-off valve to turn the water off for an extended period.
