Academic Resource Centers (ARCs)
The residence halls have Academic Resource Centers, located on the main or second level, which are small libraries with books, calculators, computers, periodicals, language tapes, reference books and typewriters. Most ARCs provide free tutoring or assistance with subjects such as English, math, or computer training. Academic Resource Centers are open a minimum of fifty hours during the week. All ARCs have facilities designed for studying.
The Jayhawker Towers Academic Resource Center, located in B Tower, is a full-service resource center for Towers and Stouffer Place residents. The center provides computers, books, and other academic support materials. For more information on services and hours of operation, call the Towers ARC office at 864-5848.
The scholarship halls each have a small computer room. Some halls have additional resource and reference material. See your Scholarship Hall Director for more information.
Dining
KU Cuisine Meal Plans are a required component of the residence hall contract and optional for scholarship hall and apartment living residents. KU Cuisine is actually a broad variety of meal plans designed to fit student lifestyles and schedules. Each student's goal should be choosing and using exactly the right meal plan for the academic year. Visit www.kudining.com for up-to-date information about KU Dining Services, including how to add cash to your KU Card, add all-you-care-to-eat meals for use in the residential dining centers, how and where to use the "cash" component of each meal plan, and how and when you can change meal plans.
Scholarship Halls with Group Dining
Meal Hours
Each scholarship hall determines its own meal hours and number of formal meals provided each week and leftovers are usually available as well. See the SHD or Proctor if you have any questions or concerns about the meal service or hours.
Guest Meals
Meal policies are designed to serve only those living in the hall. Each resident has the privilege of having meal guests as long as the guests do not infringe on the rights of other residents. Scholarship hall policies for guest meals are set individually by hall. Residents may vote to include a certain number of guest meals in the total budget, or to set a standard guest meal price payable at the time of service. All costs for meals of scholarship hall guests are ultimately the responsibility of the host.
Food Board
Most scholarship halls use in-hall food boards as a communication link between the residents and Scholarship Hall Director. Food boards seek resident input about menu selection, food quality, and general issues with meal service.
Late Plates
Residents who cannot return to the hall during scheduled times for lunch or dinner may have a late plate held for them. You must sign up for late plates in advance in the kitchen.
Sack Lunches
Residents who cannot return to the hall for lunch, Monday through Friday, may obtain a sack lunch. In some halls it is made for you; in others you are expected to make your own. Ask your SHD for more information. Dietary requirements due to illness, doctor's order or religious reasons may be accommodated on a limited basis by contacting your SHD.
Dining policies for Miller and Watkins Scholarship Halls
Kitchen Set-up
Each hall has seven individual kitchens with seven students assigned to each kitchen. Residents are required to pay a kitchen start-up fee. These funds are used for the purchase of staples and kitchen supplies. Additional payments, generally on a monthly basis, are used to fund the purchase of food for weekly meals. Residents are assigned weekly kitchen shifts for the upkeep of the kitchens.
Group Meals
With the exception of a few "independent" kitchens, each kitchen is required to eat four or five meals together each week; usually these are evening meals. Residents are responsible for planning, purchasing supplies, and preparation of these meals. New residents are not eligible for "independent" kitchens.
Individual Meals
Each resident is responsible for her own meals at breakfast, lunch, and on weekends. Storage space for each resident's personal food supply is provided in each kitchen's cabinets and refrigerator. Additional storage is available in a shared upright freezer.
Jayhawker Towers, Stouffer Place, and Sunflower Apartments
Residents living in the apartments operated by the Department of Student Housing may purchase a meal plan for residence hall dining centers. The following options are available: 5 meals, 10 meals, 15 meals, or 19 meals per week. Dining plans are non-transferable. See the previous section on residence hall dining for more information.
The Front Desk/Office
The front desk/office is the information hub and service center for the housing unit. A number of services are provided by the hall desk staff. Services may include checking out keys to special rooms (music practice rooms, piano rooms, etc.) or providing phone numbers and general information. Board games, vacuum cleaners, tools, and athletic equipment are available for limited check-out. You should also go to the front desk if you are locked out of your room, need to report a maintenance problem, or need other staff assistance. Staff is not permitted to give out student room numbers.
Lock-outs
See the paragraph in the "Safety & Security" section for procedures in your facility.
Vacuum Cleaners
Vacuum cleaners may be borrowed for one-hour periods during designated hours. The resident must leave his/her KU Card and sign the Vacuum Use Card for that particular machine. There is a $5.00 late charge if the machine is not returned on time. Replacement charges will be assessed for lost or broken vacuums. Please notify the desk staff if the vacuum you checked out is not working properly, so that it may be repaired.
VCRs
Jayhawker Towers residents may borrow VCRs at the apartment living office during regular business hours. Residence hall residents may borrow VCRs at their hall's front desk. The resident will be required to present a KU Card and leave other photo identification while the VCR is checked out.
Lost and Found
Items turned in to your hall complex office/desk will be held for thirty days. At that point, items of value will be turned over to the KU Police Department. Contact KUPD at 864-5913.
Gardening for Stouffer Place and Sunflower Apartment Residents
Garden plots are available to residents of Stouffer Place and Sunflower Apartments during the summer months. The number of spaces is limited. Sign-up is held early in the spring for plot assignments. Returning gardeners who would like to keep the same plot have priority, but still must sign up. Other assignments will be made according to preference insofar asit is possible. A waiting list will be kept if needed. You will be given a garden map with your assigned plot circled and a copy of the garden policies. You are encouraged to purchase your own tools. A water supply is available.
Stouffer Place Apartments
Flower beds may be made up to the length of the apartment and three feet wide. Residents residing on the second level may share this area with their downstairs neighbors. Beds are for flowers only. Vegetables and trelliswork are not allowed. Border fences may not exceed three feet in height.
Sunflower Apartments
Flower beds are allowed in the confined area outside of the back entrance. Please do not break additional ground.
Laundry
KU Card and/or coin-operated washers and dryers are available for use by residents in each hall/complex. Common courtesy should be exercised by all residents since many people share these machines. Residents should not leave laundry unattended. Any theft should be reported to the complex office and KU Police Department. The Department of Student Housing is not responsible for damaged or lost articles. Use of laundry facilities is for Department of Student Housing residents only.
Laundry facilities are located in the lower level of each residence/scholarship hall, the basement of Tower B, in the basement of Stouffer Place building 1, and the basement of Sunflower Apartments building 4.

Custodial Services
Residence Halls
Custodians are responsible for cleaning the public areas of each residence hall Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings. However, it is also the responsibility of every resident to assist in the upkeep of the hall by picking up areas like the hallway, lobby, and restroom. Residents are expected to keep their room/suite clean and in good condition.
Scholarship Halls
The residents are primarily responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of their hall. Custodial staff is assigned to the scholarship halls to assist and train the residents and to perform some specialized cleaning.
Maintenance
Residence Halls/Scholarship Halls
General building and equipment repairs that need to be made should be reported to the front desk in your residence hall or to your Scholarship Hall Director or Proctor. When you report a maintenance concern in your room, you are giving the maintenance or custodial staff permission to enter your room to make the repair. In the residence halls, you will be asked to complete a Maintenance Request form. In the scholarship halls, staff will enter the request on the maintenance log for the hall.
Apartment Living
An on-site maintenance staff cares for common areas of the complex as well as most maintenance problems that occur in apartments. Most maintenance requests are performed at no cost to the resident. Damage that is caused by careless or deliberate behavior will result in a charge. It is the resident's responsibility to report maintenance problems to the apartment living office for repair. The following problems should be reported immediately: uncharged fire extinguisher, non-functioning smoke detector, pipe leaks, broken tile or cracked grout, ceiling or wall leaks, and appliance malfunction.
Routine maintenance requests should be directed to the apartment living office in person or by phone during office hours. After hours or during holidays, emergency maintenance needs should be called in to the apartment living office at 864-8305.
Painting
Residents who wish to have their rooms or apartments painted should turn in a Maintenance Request. If approved, residents will be notified and given instruction to prepare their room or apartment for the work. If the room/suite/apartment has been painted by the department's staff in the past two years, it is ineligible. Residents may not paint their own room or apartment.
Preparation for Carpet Cleaning (Jayhawker Towers Only)
Students will schedule a carpet cleaning through the Jayhawker Towers Front Desk. At that time the resident will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare the apartment for cleaning. Residents are expected to have the area prepared by the time of the appointment. If the apartment is not prepared at the appointed time a $20 fine will be assessed. Residents may cancel their appointment through the front desk 48 hours prior to the scheduled time at no charge.
Pest Control
Residents living in Student Housing may request pest control service. Apartment living residents should call the apartment living office at 864-8305. Residence hall residents should complete a Maintenance Request. Scholarship hall residents should report the pest problem to their Scholarship Hall Director. Residents will receive instruction for preparing their room/suite/apartment for the pest control treatment. Residents are expected to have the area prepared by the time of the appointment. If the room/suite/apartment is not prepared at the appointed time a $20 fine will be assessed. Residents may cancel their appointment through the front desk 48 hours prior to scheduled time at no charge. Apartment residents will be asked to vacate their premises for two to four hours.
Kitchen
- Remove all items from kitchen cabinets and pantry. Place those items away from the area to be treated and cover them with a tablecloth or sheet. Do not stack food or dishes on countertops.
- Remove all drawers from cabinets; it is not necessary to empty drawers.
- Clean areas prior to treatment with a mild detergent to remove bacteria and other residue, as attempts to do so afterwards will result in removal of insecticide.
Bathroom Remove all items from bathroom cabinet and medicine cabinet.
Other Areas:
- Clear any furniture from the front of the furnace room and open the doors.
- Remove all items from shelves in clothes closets and linen closets, and clear the floors in these areas. It is not necessary to move clothes on hangers unless specifically requested.
- Treatment of other rooms may involve placement of insecticides in cracks or crevices. It may be necessary to treat tables, chairs, and electrical appliances with a non-residual flushing agent.
- Cover aquariums and fish bowls until after treatment and shut off pumps supplying air to the tank.
All residents should take a role in the prevention of pests by keeping their room/suite/apartment clean. Clean dishes and utensils immediately after using. Store foods properly, dispose of your trash properly, and report pests immediately and as accurately as possible.
Routine Health and Safety Inspections
Each semester a member of maintenance/custodial staff and the Complex Director/Scholarship Hall Driector will enter suites and apartments for health and safety inspections. Residents will be notified at least one week in advance and then again 24 hours prior to the inspections.
Residents are expected to keep their suites and apartments sanitary and safe. Inspections will be for unsanitary conditions (accumulated trash and food or cleanliness of bath areas) and for fire safety violations. If a suite or apartment does not meet health and safety specifications, the residents will have one week to correct the situation at which time another inspection will be scheduled.
Trash Disposal
Residence Halls and Scholarship Halls
Large trash cans are available on each floor for the disposal of trash from your room/suite. Large items should be taken to your hall's dumpster.
Jayhawker Towers
Place garbage and trash in plastic bags (which are available in the apartment living office). Close them securely and dispose of them in the large trash containers located throughout the courtyard.
Stouffer Place & Sunflower Apartments
All garbage and trash must be sealed in plastic bags and deposited in the dumpsters near your building.
Disposal of Hazardous Materials
Guidelines concerning the disposal of motor oil should be observed carefully. Never attempt to dispose of oil in the dumpster or allow oil and/or antifreeze to drain on the ground.
Residents in any living unit may be fined for the improper disposal of trash.
Vending Areas
Vending machines are available in most buildings; however, they are not stocked or maintained by the Department of Student Housing. If you lose money in a machine, please refer to the instructions posted on the machine.
Water Shut-offs (Apartments, Templin, Lewis, K.K. and Margaret Amini)
Shut-offs are located under the kitchen sink, lavatory, and toilet. They are there for service and maintenance of the fixtures. In case of an emergency, you may turn the water off at the fixture until maintenance arrives to make repairs. Do not use the shut-off valve to turn the water off for an extended period.
