Student Housing Professional Staff

Your staff provides information, guidance, direction, programs, and services for residents. Their role is to help you create an environment which supports learning, growth, achievement, and personal development.

Residents may call the complex office to obtain information and assistance in resolving problems with roommate or neighbor disputes, facility concerns, or other issues. It is best to let staff respond or mediate whenever you believe they can help. For resolving complaints of a threatening or dangerous nature, call KU Public Safety. Please read the "General Regulations" section of the Contract Terms for a better understanding of your rights and responsibilities as a resident.

Complex Director (CD)

Complex Directors are full-time professional staff members who have earned a baccalaureate as well as a master's degree in a field related to higher education administration. They live in the halls/apartments and supervise graduate staff, foster a strong community, advise students, advise hall governments, enforce rules and regulations, and implement administrative policies and procedures.

Assistant Complex Director (ACD)

ACDs are graduate students who reside in the hall. They assist the CD in the management of the residence hall, and have responsibility for student staff supervision, including the Resident Assistants. They facilitate educational and social programming, and supervise the operation of the academic resource center in their assigned halls. They also help with counseling, conduct concerns, and referrals. The Arts Program Coordinator for Hashinger Resource Center for the Creative Arts is responsible for coordinating/directing theatrical productions held in the hall’s theater facility, as well as other arts-related events, throughout the academic year.

Scholarship Hall Director (SHD)

Scholarship Hall Directors (SHDs) are graduate students who reside in the hall to assume overall responsibility for functions such as programming, conflict mediation, referral and general advice as well as food preparation and most custodial operations. They advise students and hall governments, enforce rules and regulations, supervise the work of the Proctors, and implement policies and procedures.

Dining Services Manager

Dining Services Managers are full-time professional staff members who are responsible for training and supervising the Dining Services staff. They ensure quality food preparation and service, and oversee food safety and sanitation. The managers meet regularly with student customers and assist in the planning of student programs involving meals and refreshments.

GMRT

General Maintenance Repair Technicians are full-time professional employees whose primary responsibility is to provide quick response to maintenance concerns in the complex. They serve as the link between the complex staff and residents and the central maintenance staff.

Custodial Supervisor

Custodial Supervisors are full-time professional employees whose primary responsibility is to ensure the cleanliness of the facilities through supervision of the custodial staff. They also assist with maintenance concerns, damage reports, and inventory.

Student Housing Paraprofessional Staff

Senior Staff Resident Assistant (SSRA)

In the residence halls and apartment living, seasoned RAs are asked to take additional leadership among their staff and assist with the administrative management of the hall. SSRAs also serve as RAs for their assigned floors.

Resident Assistant (RA)

Resident Assistants are an important link in the chain between academic achievement and personal growth in the university community. RAs are carefully selected student staff members who have the primary responsibility of advising and guiding residents while enforcing hall policy. They are successful students who have demonstrated leadership skills. RAs are valuable resources if you need help with academic, social, or personal problems. They receive special training in all aspects of residence hall living and usually know the answers to questions you may have (if not, they know where to find out). Your RA is there to help you as an individual, and your floor as a group, in any way possible.

Apartment Resident Assistant (ARA)

Jayhawker Towers ARAs live in each tower, serving as a liaison between residents and other staff by providing guidance as needed, communicating information, and fostering a sense of community. ARAs are on duty on a rotating basis in order to provide emergency service after office hours. The ARA on duty can be reached at 864-8305 after office hours and may be contacted for assistance with lockout keys, security or noise complaints, roommate conflict mediation, and emergency maintenance reports or emergency assistance. For other business, please contact the office during regular office hours.

The ARAs of Stouffer Place are responsible for the daily operation of the complex. They foster neighborhood familiarity and unity, communicate regularly with residents and office staff, report on necessary maintenance, and handle move-ins and daily concerns.

Proctor

Proctors are an important link in the chain between academic achievement and personal growth in the scholarship halls. Proctors are carefully selected student staff members whose primary responsibilities are supervision of hall shifts and maintenance concerns. They are students who have demonstrated leadership skills. Proctors are responsible for organizing and assigning the work shifts in the hall. They are valuable resources if you need help with academic, social, personal or hall shift problems. Proctors receive special training in all aspects of scholarship hall living and usually know the answers to the questions you have, or know where to find the appropriate resources. Your proctor is there to help you as an individual, and your hall as a group, in any way possible.

Desk Manager (DM)

Desk Managers are student employees who manage the front desk operation in the residence halls. Desk Managers select, hire, train and supervise the Desk Assistants and Security Monitors.

Desk Assistant (DA)

Desk Assistants are student employees in the residence halls and Jayhawker Towers who assist other students and staff. They work at the front desk and provide information, check out equipment and keys to facility rooms, distribute mail, coordinate hall tours, and respond to emergency situations.

Security Monitor (SM)

Security Monitors are student employees that help maintain a safe and appropriate environment in Student Housing facilities during nighttime hours. They help enforce policies and monitor both resident and visitor activity, perform regular patrols of the building, monitor building entrances, and respond to emergency situations and calls for assistance. Their presence is intended to foster an environment that allows residents to enjoy the premises without disturbance from rowdy behavior.

Academic Resource Center Assistant (ARCA)

Academic Resource Center Assistants staff the ARCs in each building and have the primary responsibility of assisting students who utilize the computers or need resource material from the academic resource center. They also help the Assistant Complex Director update the inventory of the academic resource center.

Dining Services Assistant

Dining Services Assistants are student employees that are involved in the preparation and serving of food. They receive special training in sanitation and food safety. There are up to four academic scholarships available to Dining Services Assistants after one year of employment. Contact any Dining Services Manager for additional employment information.

Custodial Assistant

Custodial Assistants are in charge of routine cleaning of assigned residence hall areas. These employees are typically utilized for weekend tasks, but there are also work hours available during the week. Contact a Custodial Supervisor for additional employment information.

Maintenance Assistant

Maintenance Assistants are student employees that perform routine maintenance tasks for various facilities and equipment, generally working daytime hours, Monday through Friday. Contact Housing Maintenance for additional employment information.

Skilled Trade Assistant

Skilled Trade Assistants are student employees that work along with professional employees in carpentry, electrical repair, air conditioning, plumbing, landscaping, painting, and/or special services. Contact Housing Maintenance Shop for additional employment information.
