The Residence Halls A residence hall is a living unit for single students, similar to what was called a dormitory years ago; however, a dormitory was only a place for sleeping and eating. Residence hall living provides much more: lounges, game rooms, study areas, meeting rooms, TV rooms, vending areas, laundry rooms, music rooms, computer labs, academic resource centers, and other facilities tailored to the needs and preferences of residents. In addition, residence halls offer academic and social programming to help students adjust to college life.
The Scholarship Halls The scholarship hall system provides a challenging and supportive residential experience to about 500 students each year. More than an intellectual environment, the "schol hall tradition" reflects residents' commitment to excellence through a proud history of leadership accomplishments, outstanding contributions to the university community, and most importantly, the unique spirit of "cooperativeness" which has become the hallmark of the scholarship halls. Residents living in the scholarship halls assist with the governance, maintenance, and upkeep of their hall in exchange for reduced housing costs.
Apartment Living Jayhawker Towers Apartments Jayhawker Towers is a 300-unit apartment complex on campus for upper-class KU students. One tower is reserved primarily for graduate students, and another tower is reserved for women. The two remaining towers are co-educational; (single sex by apartment). The two-bedroom apartments are available to two or four residents. Located on campus and city bus routes, Jayhawker Towers is within easy walking distance of musical and sporting events, classrooms, and the Burge Student Union.
Stouffer Place Apartments Stouffer Place Apartments provide affordable housing to student families in a supportive, community environment. The Stouffer Neighborhood (residents) Association is committed to maintaining this positive community.
Married student housing at the University of Kansas was established in 1946 when army housing units were moved from Texas and converted to apartments. The original complex was located on Sunnyside Avenue where Robinson Gym, Hayworth Hall, and the Computer Center now stand. Stouffer Place was constructed in three stages: buildings 1-11 were occupied in 1957; buildings 12-23 in 1959; and buildings 24-28 in 1962. The streets in Stouffer Place are named in honor of Dean Ellis Bagley Stouffer (a staff member for many years) and his wife Anna. The apartments offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom configurations.
Sunflower Apartments Sunflower Apartments are two-bedroom duplexes located at 11th and Missouri near Memorial stadium. Priority for these units is given to faculty, unclassified staff, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scholars. Occupancy is limited to one year. |
