Position Description

Residence Life Complex Director

As a member of the Residence Life staff in the Department of Student Housing, each Complex Director (CD) is a professional in Student Success at the University of Kansas. Complex Directors hold live-in, full-time positions, supervising graduate students and providing leadership for a residential area housing between 550 - 900 students. Specific duty assignments will be developed in orientation and training based on complex needs and the Complex Director’s experience and areas of interest. Major job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervise graduate student and desk manager staff including recruitment, selection, training, development, and performance evaluation. Indirectly supervise undergraduate student staff.
  • Provide vision for developing community using the Social Change programming model. Foster an environment which promotes diversity.
  • Collaborate with students, staff, and faculty to foster an academic community which supports student learning through residential Learning Communities or other academically- focused programs.
  • Advise complex governments and student leadership organizations.
  • Responsible for facilitating students’ personal and academic development and adjustment to university life, including informal consultation and referral services to university and community resources.
  • Foster a safe and secure environment for students. Implement and enforce policies that support student safety. Educate students on university and housing policies, safety concerns, and procedures.
  • Serve as the primary judicial officer for the complex, adjudicating student concerns and maintaining accurate records.
  • Participate in on-call rotations which provide crisis coverage for complex and campus. Serve as an information source for administration and students. Provide support for students and staff involved.
  • Coordinate daily complex operations with the Department of Student Housing staff in Residence Life, Dining Services, Custodial Services, Maintenance, and Administration involving: occupancy, payroll, facilities, summer conferences, long-range planning, and budget.
  • Act as a liaison between the complex, Department of Student Housing, Student Success, and the larger university community.
  • Serve as a committee chair for a departmental or university committee (i.e. undergraduate student recruitment, student organization advisor, elections committee, etc).
  • Perform special assignments from supervisors based on the Complex Director’s own interests and departmental initiatives.

Qualifications & Remuneration

Residence Life Complex Director

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree plus experience in residence life or other related field

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in staff supervision, student development, advising, crisis intervention, and administration. Understanding of student learning philosophy.

Salary and Benefits: $29,000 to $32,000 plus state benefits based on an annual appointment. Position includes furnished apartment plus cable, utilities and meals when dining centers are in operation.

Term of Appointment: Early July 2008 through June 2009; subsequent annual reappointments possible; orientation and training dates to be announced.
